There are regattas that present a demanding and unforgiving challenge to the paddlers. The course, set up by Pan Am at 410m, meant that only athletes with superior endurance and the ability to finish with an upkick would medal.
On race day the weather was “typical”. Wind, choppy water, tide and power boats sharing the lake. The steerers had to be at the top of their game to avoid mis-directions and even crashes. The water was so choppy, most steerers could not see the lane markers any farther than 10m…of less. DSo lane discipline was critical.
The Warriors entered two boats, a 10 mixed, and a 20 mixed.
The 10 mixed was a joy to witness when racing. With Incredible starts, superb synchronization, and a powerful finishing-kick, at 90 meters out, in each of their three races.
Needless to say, the Mixed 10 went undefeated and took home the GOLD.
The Mixed 20 delivered a yeoman performance against a respected rival. In their three races the 1st, ended in a crash. The second was a victory for the Warriors.
In the final race the two rivals were neck and neck for 360m, the with both boats calling ups, the rival boat pulled ahead for the win.
The Mixed 20 earned a SILVER medal for its effort.
In summary, the entire Warrior team is improving every week. Its women are the class of the regatta circuit, and the men are improving their ability to finish strong. The last 50m , where so many races are won or lost.
Next is Leesburg. Short sprints that demand maximum effort on every stroke.
